Should I Be Tested for COVID-19 Before Traveling?

For international travel, almost all countries have some form of test requirement for travelers. Many will not allow passengers to board inbound flights without a certified negative test result. However, the guidelines differ from country to country. Before you travel, we recommend checking with various authorities to determine what your requirements art.

  • Call the nearest embassy of the country you wish to travel to
  • Call the nearest embassy of any country where you have a layover/stopover
  • Check with the airlines you are flying on

Most countries require a negative PCR test, which PathMD provides. Many airlines and flights will not allow you to board with only an antibody test.

Even if your travel destination does not require a COVID test, be sure to regularly check that this has not changed. The requirements change often, so we recommend checking if there are any adjustments made to
conditions in the days leading up to travel.

What Kind of COVID-19 Testing Do We Offer?

We offer two kinds of testing, each proven to be highly accurate and reliable.

  • Hologic APTIMA test, which has a sensitivity rate of 98.2% and a specificity of 100%.
  • RT-PCR method, which provides a sensitivity rate of 99% and a specificity of 100%. Most countries require this test within 72 hours before travel.

We accept a variety of swab collection kits, including:

  • The Puritan UniTranz (UTM)
  • The Copan E-swab (liquid amies solution)
  • APTIMA multi-test swab

How Soon Will I Receive My Results?

Many testing centers are unable to provide test results in time for your flight. Since many flights and countries require tests no older than 72 hours, you need results that give you time to spare. But other clinics can take days or even a week to deliver results. By that time, your results won’t be valid for travel. You might need to end up canceling or rescheduling your entire trip. With PathMD, you get your results typically within 24 hours of testing.

What Should I Do If I Test Positive?

Having a positive test typically means you will not be allowed to board your train or flight. Instead, the best
option is to self-quarantine and avoid further spread of the infection.

You can again be around others and receive another test when the following conditions are met, according to the CDC.

You can be around others after:

  • 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared and
  • 24 hours have passed with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and
  • Other symptoms of COVID-19 are improving

Please note that loss of taste and smell can persist for weeks or longer after other symptoms are gone. But these symptoms are not signs you need continued isolation.
